  • What it covers

    Cover is provided for breakdown where the vehicle can not be used because of: -

    • a mechanical breakdown
    • an accident
    • vandalism
    • a fire
    • a theft or an attempted theft
    • a flat tyre
    • a flat battery
    • it having no fuel or putting the wrong fuel into it.

    Homestart in the UK

    If your vehicle breaks down whilst at home or within a mile from your home, we will arrange and pay for a breakdown vehicle to come to where you are for up to one hour to try to get the vehicle working again.

    If it cannot be repaired where it has broken down, we will arrange and pay for the vehicle to be taken to a suitable local garage for it to be repaired.

    Nationwide Recovery in the UK

    If your vehicle cannot be made safe to drive at the place you have broken down, and cannot be repaired the same day at a local garage, we will transport your vehicle, you and your passengers to your original destination, or to your home address.

    We will then arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a suitable repairer. Alternatively, we will cover bed and breakfast costs for one night or provide a hire vehicle for 24 hours.

    Roadside Assistance

    If your vehicle breaks down more than a mile from your home, we will arrange and pay for a breakdown vehicle to come and assist in trying to get it working again.

    If it cannot be repaired at the roadside, we will arrange for the vehicle, the driver and up to six passengers to be recovered to your home, original destination or a local garage.

    European Breakdown

    If your vehicle cannot be made safe to drive where you have broken down and cannot be repaired the same day at a local garage, we will recover your vehicle, you and your passengers to either your original destination or your home address. We will then arrange for the vehicle to be taken to a suitable repairer. Alternatively, we will cover bed and breakfast costs for one night or provide a hire vehicle for 24 hours.

    Cover also includes: delivery of replacement parts, alternative travel arrangements, emergency car hire, emergency accommodation, an emergency driver and vehicle recovery to the UK.

  • Significant exclusions and limitations
    • The breakdown must have occurred after the first 24 hours of cover having been taken out
    • For European cover - Any journey must not be longer than 30 days in a row, or not more than 90 days in total
    • Policy cover is for 12 months
    • 5 Call outs are allowed in any one period of cover, 2 for the same fault
    • Labour costs for more than one hour of roadside help are not covered
    • Recovery is provided to one address in respect of any one breakdown.
    • The vehicle must be permanently registered in the UK
    • The vehicle must carry a serviceable spare tyre and wheel for the vehicle and any caravan or trailer attached to the vehicle. This condition does not apply if the vehicle is not designed to carry a spare wheel. If the vehicle is not designed to carry a spare wheel, you will need to carry the appropriate aerosol repair kit.

    Types of vehicles covered:-

    • Motorcycles
    • Vans (with a GVW up to 3500kg)*
    • Motorhomes
    • Towed caravans and domestic trailers

    Vehicles less than 16 years old (11 years within Europe) which are:

    • no longer than 5.1 metres;
    • no heavier than 3,500 kilograms;
    • no higher than 1.95 metres; and
    • no wider than 2.1 metres.

    If the vehicle you are in breaks down while you are towing a caravan or trailer, cover is provided for the recovery of the vehicle and the caravan or trailer, as long as the caravan or trailer is no more than:

    • 8 metres long;
    • 3 metres high; and
    • 2.55 metres wide.

    *Any vehicle - (excludes vans with a GVW over 3500 kgs, HGVs, LCVs, minibuses, vehicles used for private/public hire or to carry livestock)

      Lawshield UK Ltd motor breakdown is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance SA UK Branch which is fully owned by the AXA Assistance Group.

    • How can I pay for cover?

      You can pay for cover online using either a debit or credit card or if you would like to speak to someone to arrange payment, please call 0333 043 1299.

    • What do I do if I breakdown?

      Keep safe, turn on your hazard lights and call the emergency number 01737 334242 (UK), or if in Europe +44 (0)1737 334242. Follow the recovery operator's safety advice and stay near to your vehicle until the recovery operator arrives. See below for reference.

      If the police are present, please tell them that you have contacted us or give them our phone number to call us for you. Text messaging is available if you are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech difficulties. Please text the word 'breakdown' to +44 (0)7624 808266.

    • What information do you require when I call?

      You should provide the following information:


      • Registration number
      • Your name, home postcode and contact details
      • Your policy number (detailed on your policy schedule)
      • The make, model and colour of the vehicle
      • The location of the vehicle
      • An idea of what the problem is
      • An SOS box number (if this applies).

      We will take your details and ask you to stay by the phone. Once we have made all the arrangements, we will call you to advise who will be coming out to you and how long they are expected to take. You will then be asked to return to your vehicle unless you have broken down on the motorway.

    • What do I do if I breakdown on a motorway?

      If you break down on the motorway, go to the nearest SOS emergency phone box. Ask the police to contact the 24-hour emergency helpline on 01737 334242 (UK).

    • How long do I have to wait for breakdown assistance?

      We aim to attend to you within the hour, our average attendance is under 45 minutes.

    • Do I pay for parts?

      When the recovery operator arrives, they will do all they can to fix the fault; the cost of the service is provided by the policy but you will have to pay for any parts that are used to get the vehicle working. Payment can be taken by either debit or credit card and if you require clarification on this please call 01737 334242 (UK) or Europe +44 (0)1737 334242.

    • Am I covered if I put the incorrect fuel in my vehicle?

      You will be responsible for the cost of draining or removing contaminated fuel from your vehicle.

    • Does the policy include Homestart?

      Yes, our policy includes Homestart. If your vehicle breaks down at or anywhere within one mile from your home, we will arrange and pay for a breakdown vehicle to come to where you are for up to one hour to try to get the vehicle working again. If the vehicle cannot be repaired, we will arrange and pay for the vehicle, the driver and up to six people to be taken to a suitable local garage (normally within 15 miles). You are responsible to pay the costs of any repairs.

    • Am I covered for any vehicle I am driving?

      No, the policy is vehicle-specific, so will only cover a breakdown for the vehicle declared on the policy. For existing policies, if you change vehicle please let us know the new details by contacting Lawshield UK Ltd on 0333 043 1299 or email us

    • Am I covered everywhere within the UK?

      Yes, you are covered within the UK, which is Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

    • What countries are covered if I purchase European Breakdown?

      In addition to the UK, you are covered in the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, the Vatican City, Malta, the Republic of Cyprus, and other islands that belong to these countries and that are in Europe.

    • What if I have a puncture?

      The recovery operator will change the wheel for you; please ensure that your vehicle carries a spare wheel or tyre. If the vehicle does not have one, you are responsible for any costs in getting another and if the wheel is secured by locking wheel nuts, please make sure you have the key.

    • If I have a further breakdown with the same fault, am I covered?

      During any 12-month period we will not be responsible for more than two claims which arise from a common fault on the same vehicle. If you need our help for more than the number of claims allowed on your policy in a 12-month period of cover or more than twice for the same fault on the same vehicle, you will have to pay for the services we provide. We will ask for a credit-card number or debit-card number before we help you.
